PSN Monthly Meeting, Mon 17 Dec 2018 - Wicking & Wicking Beds with Ian Collins

  • 17 Dec 2018
  • 7:00 PM - 9:30 PM
  • Lindfield Community Hall, 259 Pacific Highway, Lindfield

Wicking & Wicking Beds with Ian Collins

Have you ever wondered whether wicking will become mainstream, not just the domain of the backyard veggie gardener? Could we see wicking used in high rise buildings, on small farms and in council civil works?

Drawing water from a reservoir below the growing medium, wicking beds operate on the concept of capillary action, with the soil and plant roots drawing this water upwards as required. In the current climate of extreme water scarcity in Australia, this is a really smart way to utilise water for your garden!

Join us at the PSN meeting in Lindfield on December 17 to learn about a new modular wicking system designed for use by builders, landscapers and home DIY. Ian Collins (from WaterUps from DownUnder) will tell us how he and his partner came up with the initial idea, and how they developed and tested the design of their recycled polypropylene wicking cell over nearly 4 years.

Ian will also share his vision for the future of wicking. He will also bring a Perspex wicking box so we can see a wicking bed in operation.

But wait, there's more!

This evening will also be our annual AGM (Annual General Meeting).

The AGM will include:

  • a slide show of all the PSN events from 2018 (but will you see yourself up on the screen?)
  • brief reports from PSN Management Committee members (a chance to find out what really happens at their monthly meetings)
  • the election of Management Committee members for 2019 (an opportunity for you to be part of the PSN decision makers for the coming year)

Free for members, small donation for guests.

Doors open at 6:30pm - a good time to check out our members' library & catch up with other PSN members.

Please bring a plate of Xmas food to share and join us for supper after the talk.
