As we fire up for our next waste challenge in Plastic Free July, Shane Cucow, Plastics Campaign Manager at at the Australian Marine Conservation Society (AMCS), will take us for a deep-dive into the plastic pollution crisis in Australia, and the progress made so far.

As permies, we're on a journey to reduce our waste, so we're no strangers to Plastic Free July – a good time to review our commitments on reducing our own plastic waste and look for new challenges.

What isn't always clear is what kind of an impact our personal actions and advocacy are having in reducing the plastic problem, particularly for our oceans. With million of tonnes entering our oceans each year, plastic waste is choking, entangling, and killing our marine life.

Shane Cucow will give us an update on the ocean plastic pollution crisis in Australia, and the progress in the campaign to clean up our oceans by banning single-use plastics, introducing container deposit schemes, and securing a global treaty on plastic pollution. He'll be calling in via Zoom from Cairns – last stop in his Plastics Campaign road trip around Australia!

Shane's a champion of the values of Earth Care, People Care, and Fair Share. He is a keen ocean lover, and a prominent voice in the movement to ban single-use plastics in Australia, working with marine debris experts to shed light on the crisis in our oceans. Originally from a social work background, Shane has a long history in advocacy, previously working on public-led campaigns for LGBTI rights and to improve youth mental health services.

Fully vaccinated members are welcome to join us in person at Lindfield Hall, or you can dial in on Zoom.

Please register if you are attending in person.

SUPPER IS BACK! We will serve supper, tea and coffee in the hall after the speaker.

We will also have an everything swap during supper for all your excess useful stuff that will help reduce waste –  plants, crops, preserves, cloth shopping bags, drink bottles, reusable straws, books, etc. Please remember: Anything you bring that is not swapped/taken must go back home with you!
