Seaweed Excursion
11.30am – 3.00pm Saturday 21st March
Dee Why Beach
Ever been curious about seaweed? Do you know seaweed is excellent both for you and your garden? Do you know brown seaweed turns green when cooked? Seaweeds are the most highly mineralized vegetables on earth, accumulating and concentrating minerals directly from the ocean. They contain iodine, calcium, iron, manganese, potassium, vitamins A and C, protein, fibre, antioxidants, and helps regulate hormones.
Our Ku-ring-gai group is organising an excursion to the beautiful Dee Why beach for seaweed harvesting and a picnic. Bring a picnic lunch or a plate to share, a chair if you wish, and a thermos for coffee/tea. Plenty of cafes available nearby. Everyone is welcome.
Bring a basket or bucket or two to collect seaweed and maybe some wild greens, a small pocket knife, sunscreen, non-slip shoes that do not mind getting wet. Wear a hat – slip, slop, slap! Feel free to bring swim wear if you wish to swim. Also bring some seaweed recipes to share (food or fertiliser) if you have any. You can also collect seaweed washed up on the sand if available to use for your garden.
Please allow about half an hour to find a free car park on the streets or car pool (Dee Why RSL carpark is about 10 mins walk to the beach).
It's about 10 minutes walk from the main bus stop at Dee Why: B-Line bus from Wynyard,199 bus from Manly or 160X bus from Chatswood bus terminal via Frenchs Forest to Dee Why.
